Meet Dr. Matthew R. Barefoot

Matthew R. Barefoot, DDS, MD, is a board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon who combined a lifelong passion for dentistry and medicine into a practice centered around patient care.

About Dr. Barefoot

Born in West Virginia, Dr. Barefoot moved to South Carolina with his family when he was a young boy. With a lifelong interest in medicine and a passion for helping people, it was an easy decision to pursue a career in oral surgery. When the time came to open a practice in Charleston, he embraced the opportunity and established Barefoot Oral & Facial Surgery. The greatest joy Dr. Barefoot receives is when he makes a positive impact on the life of a patient. As a caring and experienced professional, Dr. Barefoot takes the time to put his patients at ease, create customized treatments, and deliver outstanding surgical care at his practice. Inspired by the ever-changing landscape of technology, he enjoys learning about new techniques and implements state-of-the-art technological advances into his practice.

Education & Residency

Dr. Barefoot completed his undergraduate education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Biology. He went on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and graduated summa cum laude. He became a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society, a national dental honor society, while attending dental school. Dr. Barefoot earned his medical degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham before completing an oral and maxillofacial surgery residency and general surgery internship at the University of Alabama, where he gained state-of-the-art training in anesthesia. He is always keen to learn about advancements in his field. As such, he routinely undergoes continued training to ensure his patients always receive the most up-to-date treatments with the most adept technological advancements available.

Certifications and Awards

Dr. Barefoot is board-certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS). In order to achieve this certification, he had to complete a rigorous peer evaluation process and demonstrate to the Board that he fosters excellence in the oral surgery field. Dr. Barefoot is also a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), an organization that assures excellence in patient care by advancing, promoting, and preserving the specialty of oral surgeons. This achievement requires Dr. Barefoot to undergo continuing education requirements and submit periodic office evaluations to meet stringent national standards.

Doctor hobbies

Outside the Office

Dr. Barefoot began martial arts training during his freshman year of college at UNC Wilmington. This culminated into later earning a black belt in Hapkido, a highly eclectic Korean martial art that employs joint locks, grappling, and throwing techniques similar to other martial arts. Currently, he continues to pursue his love of martial arts and self-defense by training at Charleston Krav Maga & MMA. He also enjoys hiking, scuba diving, and traveling. Outside of the office, Dr. Barefoot can be found spending time with his wife and children.
